Hopefully this is interesting to someone, even if off the topic;

Last week there was a bit of discussion about sound recording. SPDIF *input*
is highly desirable if you have a DAT recorder and need to get the sound
accurately into your PC. It's what the submarine guys in Adelaide used to
use to tell if their towed-sonar-array hardware was any good or not.
