Probing external SCSI devices

Under 2.2, how does one probe external SCSI devices? I plugged my AIT
drive in, and it didn't detect it automagically.

For some reason, I was expecting the kernel to magically see it, as I
seem to recall that kind of thing happening in other servers in the
past. Perhaps I'm imagining things :-)

Anyhoo, your assistance would be appreciated.
