Well, I assume that tar's verify writes all the files to tape, rewinds, 
and then compares what's on the tape with what's on the disk. It 
certainly doesn't appear that the tape drive is seeking back and forth, 
but the thing is so quiet when it's running, I really wouldn't know.

The SCSI cable is about 1.5m long, and has an active terminator on the 
drive.
