hylafax: waiting for modem to become ready

Lately my hylafax server has been perpetualy saying "waiting for modem to
become ready" It happened after I sent a fax some weeks ago and has been
like it since. Rebooting the system even reconfiguring it all doesn't seem
to fix it. Any ideas?
