Re: DSL routers question

DSL boxes are either bridges, or bridges with a router in the back of
them. But at the DSL layer essentially they're just nifty media
converters (well strictly, a super cheap ATM over copper switch).

Whether you need PPPoE depends on your DSL provider and their chosen
network architecture. Some DSL providers use PPPoE to authenticate
and access-control their customers. Some DSL providers use RFC1483
bridging and assign their custoemrs direct, static IP addresses
without needing PPPoE to be used at all.

Whether your DSL box has an embedded PPPoE client in it, or whether
you (instead) bridge the frames to your Linux box and run a PPPoE
client in there is entirely up to you (and technically equivalent
from the networks' point of view).
