What's the configuration difference? Is the Linux box a standard
install of <distribution>? It's hardly a fair comparison if the
FreeBSD box has had no tweaking, even if it is updated to -STABLE.

FreeBSD works with a unified kernel and userspace. You need to update
everything for a "seemless" upgrade.

Use CVSup to update your sources (it may take a little while the first 
time -- if you've got 4.3-RELEASE, you'll have a bit of catching up to 
do).

My /usr/src/ tree is about 283MB, so I can burn it onto CD for you if
you'd like. Just swap some blanks. That may be better for you if you
don't want to download the updates.
