Which distribution are you running? I'll assume that you're running
something derived from RedHat (Ptew!), but you really should specify
that.

You'll probably have to restart networking if you're on RedHat. The
hierarchy that RedHat have setup in terms of service control isn't
particularly modular in that regard -- routing just comes under the
overall umbrella of "networking".

You could always cut out the bit from the network start scripts that
refer to routing and copy them into your own "routing" shell script.

What do you mean by "doesn't seem to be working very well"? Does route 
give you syntax errors?
