Lucent WaveLAN cards, or ORiNOCO as they're called now. Supported by
Linux, FreeBSD, MacOS and Windows.

Pry open an AirPort[1], and you'll see that they've got Lucent-branded
WaveLAN cards in them. They're basically 486s running some software to
handle IP, PPP and such. It didn't require that much intelligence from
Apple. The same applies to the other generic things out there.

Well, a Lucent card will set you back about $350 (Tax Inc.). Assuming
you're not intending to put this into a laptop, you'll need an ISA
adapter card, which will set you back about $165 (Tax Inc.). Add onto
that the cost of a machine to act as a bridge, and you're going to
have to fork out a lot more than $700.

Integrity Data sell the cards and the ISA Adaptors.[2]
