It seems that quite a few "popular" mail clients choose to wrap at 72
characters. It seems that even you seem to thing that it's a good thing
to do, as you've just said above.

The RFC 2822 states that a maximum of 998 characters should be used,
with 78 characters as the recommended length of line, including the
CRLF.

Maybe I was beeing unfair trying to impose my preferences on Dale...
