Historically, "tier one" companies, particularly Compaq and IBM, have a
tendency to "value add" by changing things like the BIOS, or chip
signatures -- I've had an experience with an IBM network card that I'm sure
was a standard <blah> (can't recall), but IBM had changed the PCI signature,
so it was unrecognised to the PnP software in Linux...
