font problem

hello all,

last night i booted mandrake 8 (expecting it to auto start KDE) to the point
before X started. it errored saying that somthing about /unix fonts not
found. not too sure about the error as i was in a hurry and didnt write it
down

i tried starting XFS and that gave indication of it starting but hung with
some info on the command line. not very helpfull. 

the last thing i remember doing was copying files form DOS to Linux
partition and that did end badly. no error though.

any ideas?
