i have not touched nvidia stuff at any stage of the game. where is best to
download the RPM (or tar) that i need for the G-force 2 mx? also the how-to
for concvincing xfree to use nvidia rather then generic?

are you running the nvidia drivers or the generic kernel drivers?

I'm running a very similar setup at home, same graphics card,
also running Manduck 8 & have no probs with OpenGL

I installed the Nvidia drivers (source, not rpm), and that 
was it, worked fine, just follow the directions on their site.
