That's excellent - and simple.
I've tried it with my tcsh login shell as
ssh-agent startx & logout
and this fulfills all of my requirements!
Now I can study xdm/gdm/kdm at leisure,
staying blissfully ignorant of such "user friendliness"
until I really need to know about it.
