Strangely enough, I just spent four days in a room with 5 PCs all
running RH7.1.  No file system damage.  I've also been running it on
my laptop (about 2 months), and various other assorted machines.

Sure does.  I presume all PCs had the same hardware?  Perhaps the
supplied kernel has some problem when interacting with the IDE chipset
in those computers?  I presume no non-default hdparm settings were
being used?
