I searched for and I found the structure with mixer
initial settings
( I will post the filename and location later - not at
home at the moment) 
I changed it but the results where somewhat ambiguous:
when I 
tested, the values using aumix they were different
from what I 
had modified the kernel source to... and family
priorities have 
prevented me from investigating more rigorously so
far.

The card is a SB-AWE64 which in all other respects is
working perfectly.
Standard Kernel 2.2.18 on Debian 2.2r0
