.diff files and patching

Hmm...

I've just started compiling Ximian GNOME -- they provide the source in the 
form of the original software plus a diff file which has all the Ximian 
changes.

They provide said changes in a .diff file. What I'd like to know is how I 
apply this diff file to the original source.

Can someone advise here? Is it through the use of patch?
