The first step works fine;

The only thing I can see is there should be no space
between "ro" and "loop". When I tried it as you have
typed it, it just printed the help. Removing the space
in the options made it work, and I could ls & cat
files in the image.

Why it hangs the console I dont know. It should just
print a usage message.

This was on Debian 2.2r0.

I've had no problems seeing inside images.

As for making it burn to a cdr, I can't comment as
this box doesnt have a burner in it. At the moment I
find it quicker to VNC to my remote my 98 box which
has a burner & use Adaptec. Sooner or later I'll need
to do something a bit more no-standard in which case
I'll need to get cdrecord working.

Try XCDRoast which gives a GUI over the top & hides
making the images from you.
