$Id in files exported from CVS
I've worked with CVS for a while, though I've not even scratched the
surface when it comes to using it's full functionality.
For example, I've seen lines such as this in code (often in comments)
which has the tell-tale signs of CVS (index.php,v -- note the ',v'):
$Id: index.php,v 1.217 2000/12/12 21:16:57 pfalcon Exp $
Now, it seems stupid to be typing in the version number of the file each
time, not to mention the problems you'd encounter with more than one
person changing the version number :-)
It looks like a good way of telling what version the file you're editing
is at. How do I go about pulling this sort of thing into my code?
Does CVS automatically replace a certain string with an 'Id' entry? What
should I do. I've had a bit of a hard time finding information on it
through CVS documentation.
TIA!
