IP packet ident field = 0 always!!!!

This is really wierd.
I've just been tracing all my ping packets,
and I've noticed that all of the IP ident fields are zero!

I've never seen that before.
This holds for all of my 2.4.x kernel systems,
but not for the 2.2.x systems.

Has anyone heard anything about this?
It seems to me like that this must be very bad
for communications reliability if any fragmentation
happens.
All of the packets do seem to have the DF (don't fragment)
bit set, but I can't think of a good reason for
throwing away a standard IP layer feature.

Is there some parameter which you turn on or off to
control the IP ident field?

Cheers,
Alan Kennington.
