IDE tape drive & Tar

Hi all,

Just have a small problem getting a Traven TR4 IDE tape drive to work under
RedHat 7.1

/proc/ide/hdd/model tells me that it is a Seagate STT8000A, so Linux knows
it is there.

When I do a

tar -cvf /dev/ht0 /home (I hope this is the correct device for the first
IDE tape drive)

I get the following errors on the console

ide-tape ht0: I/O error, pc = 10, key = 2, asc = 4 ascp = 1
ide-tape ht0: I/O error, pc = 34, key = 2, asc = 4 ascp = 1
ide-tape ht0: I/O error, pc = 1, key = 2, asc = 4 ascp = 1
ide-tape ht0: I/O error, pc = 0, key = 3, asc = f0 ascp = 2b
ide-tape ht0: drive not ready
tar: /dev/ht0 : cannot open : Device or resource busy
tar: Error is not recoverable: exting now

The drive worked fine in a former life under another OS.
Has any managed to get one of these drive to work under Linux

Steve Sloan
