Until this is more widely used it won't be of much help, but there is
a patch available for gzip which makes it rsync friendly.  Only the
gzip doing the compression needs to be patched.

Rusty wrote it and a patch is here (not sure if its the latest one).

Warning: If there is a bug in it you may not be able to gunzip
your file!
