uh... have you actually tried typing "set -o vi" in bash on linux?
I'll presume you have, although i don't understand why it didn't work - i
just tried it 5 seconds ago and it worked for me.
However, the "correct" way to set your readline editor mode is by editting
the inputrc or .inputrc file (depending on whether you want to change the
system-wide defaults, or override them locally for your user"
the shell manual, as always, would have provided this information, and more.
