Small faculties have reported good success with e-smith
  http://www.e-smith.net/

Linux-based and easy to configure.  Really only falls
over in large corporate environments (where AAA isn't
done on the e-smith server) and they are working on
LDAP integration to fix that.

Would be fine as a server/firewall for schools.
