Jake,

Looks like it _is_ a well-known problem.
In the changelog for 2.4.3, it says this:

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/ChangeLog-2.4.3

Quote:

  - Chris Mason: another reiserfs tail writing fix

And later, it says:

  - Chris Mason: reiserfs, another null bytes bug

Well, this is very satisfying.
These bug descriptions match what I'm seeing exactly.
The only question now is how long it will take for ReiserFS
to settle down.

Since I'm using 2.4.0, and they're still finding ReiserFS bugs in 2.4.3,
I sort of wonder when is the best time to get the latest kernel
and install it.

Anyway, thanks for the hint.

Cheers,
Alan Kennington.
