kernel compile problem

howdy all,
i have downloaded and attempted to compile the 2.40 kernel. it seems to have 
no problems except that its too lage. 

its about 2.5 meg.

i configered it with :
make oldconfig

when running lilo, it ways it too large. ny ideas?
