multi-machine editing
What's the best method to edit a set of 50 files on
3 computers?
My situation is that I have a bunch of, say, 50 files
in one directory which I want to edit on:
1. Home workstation.
2. Office workstation.
3. Laptop.
I only edit on one at a time generally - if I remember to
be disciplined about it.
But I want to keep them all synched.
Now I've written some lines of makefile commands for
exporting all newly edited files from machine 1
to machine 2, and vice versa.
But this requires discipline to make sure I don't
forget to do the sync operation.
If I forget to sync, I'd really like to get a message
coming up to warn me that I've edited a file differently on
two different machines.
I have some experience with SCCS, which requires you to
book out a file before editing and then book it back.
But then you have to book out each time just before
starting work, and then book back again etc.
I haven't used CVS yet. Nor RCS.
My question is:
Is there a generally agreed best solution for this problem?
Whenever I run the "sync" operation, I just want something like
what a Palm organizer does - the latest file is copied to
the other machine(s), and if a file has been edited on
more than one machine since the last sync, I should be warned
so that I can do the thing by hand.
And I don't want to have to do any "book-out" operation before
starting work each time.
E.g. I might be working off-line on the laptop.
Cheers,
Alan Kennington.
