ALSA capture from Hoontech SD-XG optical interface

Has anyone ever had success capturing audio from
an S/PDIF optical interface on the Yamaha 754 based
sound card (e.g. Hoontech SoundTrack Digital-XG)
with the ALSA software? I can record from the mike
but not the optical fiber.  

I've posted a query to the ALSA users group,
but I don't expect a reply on this.

I just get blank audio files from the optical interface.
