Whilst I can't answer directly, if the tape is giving autosense errors
on then I'd be inclined to say that it may be a tape drive issues rather
than a data issue. You should try using /dev/nst0 as well - st0 will
rewind after commands and such and could rewind underneath you if things
go slightly awry during a backup...
