3D - Mesa stuff

I have a voodoo2 in this box, so of course in my 'spare' time I came up with
the plan to do 'something' with this card. I haven't had much luck yet.

I have MESA and Glide and such installed, as came with MDK 7.2, but haven't
managed to do anything that works yet (aside from the 3dfx test)

I downloaded ssystem (the solar system thing) as a test program, but can't
get that to compile... I get:

gcc -o ssystem cfgparse.tab.o lex.cfg.o ssystem.o init.o positions.o
joystick.o cmdline.o keyboard.o mouse.o scrnsht.o sun.o timer.o util.o
astrolib.o jpeg.o stars.o -L/usr/X11R6/lib -L/usr/X11R6/lib -ljpeg -lglut
-lMesaGLU -lMesaGL -lXext -lXmu -lXi -lX11 -lm
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lMesaGL
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [ssystem] Error 1

when it links, and I'm not clued up enough to know why. The Mesa GL and GLU
libs are installed and ld.so.conf and such points to the directories... So
what exactly does this mean to point me in the right direction...

I've read what I can about the whole 3d thing, but the readme howto's seem
out of date and as far as I understand it's difficult to get 'old' stuff like
GLQuake to run due to the libc5/glibc thing...

confused as usual.
