compiling help

hey all,
 
i havn't used windows in a few weeks now. it seems that linux (mandrake 7.x) 
is good for most things that i used windows for. however, i still have 
trouble installing / compiling applications on linux. it seems that i am 
always missing some library files or atherwise perhaps some other error.
 
im after a howto or some help from this list as to getting going with 
compiling. 
 
any help is good.
