cross over cable length

Just a quick one, hopefully someone has an answer.
 I presumed that a cross over (C/O) cable would go about 100m like a
normal cable, however, the one I made up is only 45-50m and I get packed
loss, game halts and long pauses.  Is there a problem with long C/O's
