You could get yourself an RJ-45 'coupler' for joining two cables, along with
a second cable. Run this between your two desktops then when you want to
attach your laptop, simply pop the cable attached to your main computer (the
cross-over) out of the coupler and into your laptop. I have seen a 3-way
coupler, too, but I doubt that having two 10BaseT devices attached in
parallel is likely to work. Should be available at your nearest quality
computer/electronics parts store (and possibly even Dick Smith Electronics
et al).

I believe I may have seen a 2-way switch (the physical kind of switch) with
RJ-45 connections at MIMP's site, but personally I'd have to question the
cost of having the switch plus two more cables (!) over the value/cost of
having a networking hub.
