Something I find rather interesting in this story is this...

   "I don't believe open source works well for commercial companies
   because they can't control schedules," said Michael Cusumano, a
   professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan
   School of Management who sits on the board of solution provider
   NetNumina Solutions.  "Software companies try to have regular
   development cycles.  That's how you build a rhythm for a company.?

So is he saying is that a software company needs a regular product
release to keep investors happy, so that no-one will mind that the
product is crap? Products are usually crap because the development is
controlled by the marketing department's release schedule, not because
the engineers have finished it.

It is this kind of attitude that Open Source solutions like Linux are
undermining. Now it is possible for software to ship, because it is
finished, not because The Rolling Stones have been booked.
