Check out smssend - a Utility to send SMS messages to GSM mobile phones
or smsclient - A program for sending short messages (SM / SMS)

Somehow, I came accross a linux SMS server (which is what the original
poster of this mail was after) - its lying around at home...my iterest died
quicky as i saw that you of course need some special connection to Telstra,
where prices are, of course, inordinately high.

Theres a website that lets you send free SMS, but they recently went
'subscribe to us' as opposed to their prior policy of being able to send
straight away:
http://sms.totalise.com.au
