"Network Extensible Window System" was what I was thinking of
(whether I remember it correctly is a different kettle of hamsters),
but display postscript rings a bell.  I think it ran on Suns
before NeXTs, though, before Sun got into X.

Abstraction is a wonderful thing.  I'm always torn between the
