This isn't a problem with your soundcard. This looks more like a problem
with the CD itself.
Is the CD you are trying to mount audio or data (bear in mind that mp3s are
data)?
If it is audio then you do not have to mount it at all for it to work. Just
pop it in and fire up your favourite CD player program and it should work
(assuming that you have got your soundcard configured correctly under linux)
As you said before that you wnat to use xmms, I will assume that you want to
play mp3s. For a (not so) quick test, go to http://mp3.com and find a small
mp3 to download just so that you can make sure that everything works.
