It is an internal, IDE one, found at /dev/hdd.  So I wouldn't have
thought this would be a problem.

Yes, that's it.  Unfortunately no, I didn't do such a check.  I trusted
that zip disks and related kernel drivers were reliable.  It looks like
I shouldn't have.
