Soundcard

Configuring my soundcard -works with Vmware win98 but would like use it
with xmms.

When I do mount /cdrom I get

bombay@gomez:~ $mount /cdrom
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdd,
       or too many mounted file systems

I went into fstab and changed the iso9660 fstype to auto and tried
again.
The result

bombay@gomez:~ $mount /cdrom
/dev/hdd: Input/output error
mount: /dev/hdd has wrong major or minor number
bombay@gomez:~ $  


Am I missing something ?   - new to sound
