Sounds like a good idea.  I've got another suggestion for you though.
In addition to giving away secondhand systems to those in need, why
not also sell secondhand bits and pieces cheaply?  What I am thinking
is a computer hardware version of a Goodwill shop etc.  Instead of
selling secondhand clothes etc, you could sell secondhand bits and
pieces of hardware.  You could use this money as a fundraiser for the
cause, and in addition it would raise your profile.  You could have a
"Web Front" shop instead of the normal charity store.  Just an idea
anyway.
