Internal modem for Linux --- what should I buy?

I'm wanting to buy a new 56K internal modem for use under Linux and
sent a message off to Wintronics (which supports Linux in spite of
their name!).  This is the reply:

	I have been looking for a internal modem that will work under
	linux for a long time the truth is there are none on the
	market at the moment.

which is a pretty scary response!

I would buy an external one except the internal ones seem to be about
1/4 of the price of an external one!

Any ideas out there?
