Auslinx Tasmanian Devil modem

I'm very new to Linux but really want it to be my OS. Under windows my 
Auslinx external Tasmanian devil 56es dowloads off the net at a very steady 
4.8k whereas under Linux I only get 2.5k or thereabouts. 

If there is a problem with this modem can someone recommend an easily 
obtainable and easily installed modem thet will give me good download speeds. 
My ISP said "Oh that's Linux, it doesn't go as fast as Windows"

Somehow didn't sound quite right to me.
