Whats on my system Part2

Thanks for the help on this.
As Andrew guessed, install.log has long since disappeared.
rpm -qa |less and
rpm -qip <package-name>
both work, of course.  However, what I want (if only the command was legal) is
rpm -qip * > package-list.15Dec2000 

I looked at /usr/doc/<package> README files
rpm -qip <package> uses something very simlar to, but not identical to, the
first paragraph of the corresponding README. 
Q.  Where does rpm -qip get its data from?
Could I produce something like the RH "Power Tools" listing fairly easily?
If so, how?
