samba

Hey,

I'm a real novice, I was trying to configure samba, I edited the
/etc/samba/smb.conf I made the necessary changes but when I try to test it
using smbstatus.

I.e. I  typed :

Smbstatus -dp

T comes back with message using configfile = smb.conf
Lock dir = /var/samba

Couldn't open status file /var/lock/samba/STATUS..LCK

What does this mean and how can I check if samba is working?

Thanks.

Alex.
