What's on my system?

Like many others, I booted from my RH6.2 CDROM, commenced the install process,
selected Gnome Workstation and (more or less) let Mr RedHat get on with it.

So how do I know what apps are on my system?
(I've looked for an install log, but can't find one)

Even if I can find a list of installed apps, how would I know what they were
for? (recent example - I was introduced to a super command line ftp thingo
called "wget", which was on my system but whose name meant next to nothing at
first glance)

Clues, anyone?
TIA
