low ping rocks for gaming - but for anything else, throughput is what
really counts (apart from interactive, eg telnet, for example).

That's the sucky bit. I've been playing around with a Bigpond ADSL
line on my girlfriend's phone line and found it quite acceptable in
terms of throughput, but going via Melbourne to get across town is
a little absurd (and sucks for game ping times).
My ADSL line, on the other hand, doesn't go via Melbourne.

(!X is "communications prohibited by filter", !U is "unreachable").
