However you don't need to ask Telstra for the ADSL service if
you are planning on using another ISP - it doesn't work that
way here (yet). Your ISP (if they provide ADSL service) will
do all the ADSL side of things for you, and is also responsible
for the CPE (customer premesis equipment).

Pretty much - some ISPs (not sure who yet) may disconnect the PPPoE
session if it idles out, or if it reaches a maximum session time, but
none of this stops you wrapping your linux PPPoE commands into a looping
script - it's not like it costs you a phone call to reconnect any more :)

Bigpond explicitly do not offer permanent IP (yet). They won't say
when either.

Currently, no amount of money will appear to convince Bigpond that
they should provide a fixed IP - shop around instead.
