I have ADSL from Telstra (in Canberra) and have had no problems
connecting using linux. As part of the installation they put in an
ethernet card which connects to the ADSL modem, which in turn is
connected to the phone line. AFAIK Telstra don't officially support
ADSL, but they don't object to you using it.
The software under Linux was very easy to setup (I use rp-pppoe 2.2).
