Re: ADSL Enabled Exchange Areas: Updated 20/11/2000
Hey Nick,
At SYC we have had an ADSL link since it first became available in August (I
was just about checking the Telstra website hourly around then... Needless
to say, we managed to get our order in before anyone else did :)
We are running NAT on a linux machine which is connecting 5 offices at 4
different sites to the service. I decided to run the Roaring Penguin PPPoE
client, which from what I can make out is one of the better ones. I would
have to agree with that comment too. I downloaded the RedHat RPM, installed
it, ran `adsl-setup`, followed the prompts and then ran `adsl-start` and we
were online.
Ping time between our machine and pretty much any ISP in Adelaide I've
pinged is between 40 and 90ms, which is a _little_ bit better than a modem
:) considering that all our data goes over to Melbourne and back. That's
about the only thing I've noticed, Telstra route all the ADSL stuff back to
Vic for some reason (either that, or they have .vic.telstra.net addresses
for their gateway addresses in SA!). Here's a traceroute to
www.linuxsa.org.au:
Via our Telstra ADSL link:

What's with the unreachable messages for Netcraft? Oh well, in any case, you
can see the point that I am trying to make :) The ADSL is a little bit
faster!

Windows."
[1] Bearing in mind that this is during Telstra's "Singapore Outage", so I
am not too sure about the current state of their routing [2]...
[2] However, when is Telstra's routing ever correct....
