Check your default network settings carefully.  You'll find that there
are a lot of settings that are more than likely configured AFTER the ppp
interface starts.  When you start PPP like that on startup there will be
some things that are not likely to be loaded/configured.

Can you check that the PPP modules are being loaded into the kernel
before the interface starts? Is your ethernet cards started (presuming
you have them), etc.

Also, please turn off HTML email to the list; some of the more
experienced people on here do not have the facilities to read it, as
they use predominantly text-based programs like Mutt, Elm and Pine.
