Makes a good machine for lots of stuff... I got a small news cache on
mine using Leafnode. It d/ls news at night when we're all in bed so
there isnt as much performance hit when everyone wants to read their
news. The squid cache is good as well as it caches all the frequently
used pages and can can advertisment banners.
Also, use wget on the firewall and have it get filenames from a file.
If i find some large files I want to download I just whip their URLS
into the wget list and leave it go... can switch off mine/crash
it/reboot it/throw it out the window, and the files still come in.
If your security requirements aren't too great (read home user) and you
can firewall out the ports that dont need external access then you can
do quite a lot on the firewall box if you need to.
Cheers,
Adam
